Google Cast Arrives in Hotel RoomsGoogle Cast Arrives in Hotel Rooms Google Cast, now known as Chromecast, is expanding its presence to hospitality settings. In partnership with SONIFI, LG TVs in hotel rooms will soon feature Google Cast support. How Google Cast Works Google Cast allows users to wirelessly stream content from smartphones, tablets, or laptops to a TV or connected device. This technology supports various platforms, including Android, iOS, Windows, ChromeOS, and macOS. Benefits for Hotel Guests With Google Cast in hotel rooms, guests can easily connect to their TV and access compatible apps like YouTube, Disney+, and Max. They can scan a QR code to pair their devices and enjoy the convenience of casting their favorite content. SONIFI’s STAYCAST platform provides additional functionality, enabling users to log into apps and have them log out automatically at check-out. Expanded Market SONIFI’s solution is used in over 500,000 hotel rooms globally, with Google Cast support expected to roll out by Fall 2024. This move will significantly expand the availability of Google Cast in hospitality environments. Comparison with Apple AirPlay Similar to Google Cast, Apple has recently made deals to bring AirPlay to hotel rooms. However, AirPlay is proprietary technology that only works on Apple devices, limiting its compatibility. Google Cast, perhaps better known as Chromecast, makes it pretty easy to get content from just about any device to a TV, and it’s coming to more hotel rooms soon.
The Google Cast standard, recently renamed ‘Chromecast’, allows TVs to wirelessly accept input from smartphones, tablets and laptops, whether they’re running Android, iOS, Windows, ChromeOS or macOS. In simplified terms, this is done by passing the video feed from some type of app or website and passing it to the TV or device connected to the TV. It works quite well and the standard has become widely available over the years.
However, in hotel rooms, finding Google Cast is quite hit and miss.
This week it was announced that more LG TVs in hotel rooms will add Google Cast support. This will be done via new software from SONIFI, a company specialized in ‘hospitality technology’. LG TVs in hotel rooms will be equipped with Google Cast, allowing users to connect to their TV and cast compatible apps (YouTube, Disney+, Max, etc.) using a QR code to pair. This will be integrated with SONIFI’s existing “STAYCAST” platform, which allows users to log into apps on the TV and have the apps log out at the end of the stay (check-out).
SONIFI’s solution is available in more than 500,000 hotel rooms worldwide, with Google Cast support rolling out in Fall 2024.
LG TVs now also support Google Cast for consumer TVs.
This is also because Apple has made deals to bring AirPlay to hotel rooms. And while that’s all well and good for Apple users, AirPlay is a standard that won’t work on any device without an Apple stamp on the back, while Google Cast is as universal as it is today.
