According to the police affidavit, Spendlove approached the operator at 150 S. 400 West and knocked on the door, demanding entry. He intended to force the engineer to reverse the train to a stop that he had missed. The operator and another passenger intervened, telling Spendlove to leave the train. He responded by swinging his fists at the other rider. UTA police officers arrived and attempted to detain Spendlove, who resisted arrest and tried to stay on the train. Officers eventually subdued Spendlove and placed him in a restraining device known as a “taco container” for transport. He refused to identify himself until he was in jail. Spendlove has been charged with assault, obstructing a police officer, failure to reveal identity, and a misdemeanor count of assault with intent to commit a bus hijacking.
SALT LAKE CITY – A man had to be placed in a wrap unit after he tried to break into the driver’s cabin of a TRAX to force the train to return to a missed stop.
Isaiah Spendlove, 27, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of assault, obstructing a police officer, failure to reveal identity and a misdemeanor count of assault with intent to commit a bus hijacking, according to the affidavit. Police .
Saturday morning, police said Spendlove attempted to intimidate the operator of a Utah Transit Authority TRAX train at 150 S. 400 West.
The affidavit stated that Spendlove “knocked on the door” to try to gain access to the driver’s cab and force the engineer to reverse the train to a stop he had missed.
Police reported that the TRAX operator and another passenger yelled at Spendlove to get off the train. Spendlove began swinging his fists at the other rider “in an attempt to attack him,” the affidavit said.
UTA police officers arrived during the alleged attack and attempted to take Spendlove into custody, the affidavit said. Police said Spendlove resisted officers and tried to stay on the train.
“Officers were able to get (Spendlove) off the train and (he) was able to resist,” the statement said. “(Spendlove) was placed in a ‘taco’ container for restraint and transport.”
Police said Spendlove refused to identify himself to officers until he was in jail.
