The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against the illegal distribution and sale of counterfeit brand of Ginny non-diary creamer products.
According to NAFDAC, non-dairy creamer is a mixture of many food additives known as coffee creamer or whitener.
It is used in food as a substitute for powdered milk or to reduce the amount of milk in beverages including coffee, tea, oatmeal, hot chocolate and baked goods.
NAFDAC said in a statement on Wednesday that several labelling irregularities were found on the counterfeit brands of Ginny creamer, indicating non-compliance with pre-packaged food labelling guidelines.
“The following details, irregularities and non-compliances were observed in the counterfeit product comparison with a genuine batch of Ginny Non-dairy Creamer,” the statement reads.
“Images of cows are misleading because the ingredients are not diary-listed; Absence of NAFDAC Reg. No: This unregistered product does not comply with legal requirements.
“The safety and quality of the product is not guaranteed, and the net weight stated as ‘±35 g’ is ambiguous.
“All Zonal Directors and State Coordinators of NAFDAC have been directed to conduct surveillance and clean up the adulterated product within the zones and states.
“Distributors, wholesalers, retailers and consumers are advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the distribution, supply, sale and consumption of counterfeit versions of Ginny Creamer Products.
“All packaged food products must be obtained from authorized/licensed suppliers. The authenticity and physical condition of the products must be carefully checked.
“Consumers are advised to report any suspected sale of substandard and adulterated packaged food, drugs or medical devices, cosmetics and other regulated products to the nearest NAFDAC office, NAFDAC on 0800-162-3322 or via email: (email protected)
“Similarly, healthcare professionals and patients or consumers are also encouraged to report adverse events or adverse reactions associated with the use of NAFDAC regulated products to the nearest NAFDAC office, or through the use of the E-reporting platforms available are at the NAFDAC.”
