MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A Rikers Island inmate escaped from police custody Wednesday while at a Manhattan hospital, according to the Department of Correction.

James Mossetty, 35, was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue on June 5 for a medical issue, officials said. He escaped while the DOC prepared for his transport back to Rikers.

Mossetty was arrested in Manhattan on January 6. He is charged with assault, criminal possession of a narcotic drug and theft of services, according to the DOC.

The DOC works with the NYPD and U.S. Marshals to arrest Mossetty.
