Length balls don’t usually produce wickets, not on pitches as good as Kensington Oval, which was without a blade of grass on Saturday. But earlier in the game, Bumrah had found a way to clear opener Reeza Hendricks with a long-swinger, a gift he once lacked but had learned through introspection.

“I don’t know how much I can say about Bumrah. We have seen this from him for so long. When he has the ball in his hands, he creates magic,” Rohit said.
With 7 runs per over to defend 3 overs and the title slipping away, you might be tempted to bowl the magic balls. But Bumrah and Rohit decided to build up the pressure by bringing the straight fielders forward, forcing the batters to find the harder square boundaries against Bumrah’s corner.
The plan worked. Jansen missed, Bumrah came close and struck. At that crucial stage of the match, Bumrah was ready to work hard because that is how T20 matches can be won.
Thinking on his feet is also one of Bumrah’s great qualities. When he had to look for swing with the new ball, when he had to play the slower balls from ball one, as he did against Afghanistan in Barbados, Bumrah would pick the marker for the rest of the bowling group to follow.

“Normally, I am the one who tries to control my emotions and get the job done, but today I don’t have many words. I don’t normally cry after a match, but emotions take over,” Bumrah said.
“We were in trouble, but we are really over the moon to win from that stage. My family is here, we came close last time (2023 ODI World Cup) and we got the job done here. There is no better feeling than seeing your team through in a game like this.”
