Pune Police to Appeal Supreme Court in Porsche Accident CasePune Police to Appeal Supreme Court in Porsche Accident Case The Chief Minister of Maharashtra has authorized the Pune police to challenge the Bombay High Court’s decision to release a 17-year-old boy involved in a fatal Porsche accident in May to the Supreme Court. The decision to appeal was made by the Pune police after consulting with the state government. On June 25, the High Court ordered the immediate release of the juvenile defendant, citing irregularities in his pre-trial detention by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) and emphasizing the importance of adhering to juvenile laws. Public outcry ensued after the teenager, who was initially released on bail hours after the May 19 accident, was subsequently sent to an observation home in Pune. Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, the minor was released and placed in the custody of his paternal aunt. The appeal is based on a petition filed by the boy’s aunt, alleging unlawful detention. The boy’s father and grandfather are currently in jail in connection with the incident. One case involves the alleged tampering with his blood samples, and the other relates to the alleged kidnapping and wrongful detention of the family chauffeur, who was initially charged with driving the car. A Pune court is expected to consider the bail pleas of the boy’s father and grandfather in the alleged driver kidnapping case on Monday. After the May 19 accident, the JJB initially granted the teenager bail and placed him under the care of his grandparents and parents, directing him to write an essay on road safety. The police subsequently filed a plea with the JJB to modify the bail order due to public outrage over its lenient conditions. The juvenile was taken into custody on May 22 and admitted to the observation home.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra has given permission to the Pune police to appeal the Bombay High Court’s decision to release a 17-year-old boy allegedly involved in a Porsche accident in May to the Supreme Court. The state government was consulted by the Pune police when they decided to appeal the High Court’s verdict to the Supreme Court.
On June 25, the top court ordered the immediate release of the adolescent defendant, citing the illegality of the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) pre-trial detention orders that sent him to an observation home and the need to properly enforce the law regarding juveniles to maintain.
Following a public outcry, the teenager, who was released on bail just hours after the May 19 accident, was shifted to the observation home in Pune, Maharashtra, three days later.
After the Supreme Court’s ruling, the minor left the observation home and his paternal aunt was given custody of him.
The boy’s aunt filed a petition alleging that he was being unlawfully detained, and the warrant was issued on that basis.
Two IT workers were killed after the adolescent’s father’s Porsche collided with a two-wheeler in the city’s Kalyani Nagar area on May 19, police said. The teen was driving the car while intoxicated.
In two separate cases involving the incident, the minor’s parents and grandfather are in jail. One involves the alleged exchange of the boy’s blood samples, and the other involves the alleged kidnapping and wrongful detention of a family chauffeur who was facing charges for driving the car when the accident occurred.
On Monday, a Pune court is expected to decide the bail plea of the boy’s father and grandfather in the alleged driver kidnapping case.
Following the incident in the early hours of May 19, the JJB granted the young man bail the same day and directed that he remain in the care of his grandfather and parents. In addition, the young man was required to write a 300-word essay on road safety.
The police have filed a request with the JJB to amend the bail order following public outrage over the speedy bail under liberal conditions.
The youth was arrested by the administration on May 22 and taken to the observation home.
