The incident occurred around 12:16 a.m., when a vehicle driven by the sole occupant careened off the road and into the trees, just south of the County Street exit on the north side of Route 40. Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered a heavily damaged vehicle entangled in vegetation. Firefighters used chainsaws to clear a path to the car and deployed the Jaws of Life to extricate the trapped driver. The patient was swiftly transferred to St. Luke’s Hospital’s Level 2 Trauma Center for treatment of serious injuries. Thankfully, due to the rapid response of firefighters, a medical helicopter was not required. Firefighters remained at the scene to assist in recovering the vehicle from the forest and remove a damaged section of guardrail from the roadway to ensure safety. The state police are currently investigating the cause of the crash and have not yet released an official statement. The condition of the driver remains critical at this time.
LAKEVILLE — A car crash that occurred on Route 140 in Lakeville left the driver having to be extricated from a vehicle using his jaws at 12:16 a.m. Tuesday morning, July 2.
The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was treated for serious injuries by firefighters and taken to St. Luke’s Hospital’s Level 2 Trauma Center, the Lakeville Fire Department said.
A call was made for a medical helicopter, but thanks to the “quick work” of firefighters, the helicopter was not needed, firefighters said.
Emergency crews found a heavily damaged vehicle off the road and in the trees just south of the County Street exit on the north side of Route 40.
Firefighters used chainsaws to cut through vegetation to reach the vehicle, and once at the vehicle, Jaws of Life were used to free the driver.
The patient was removed from the vehicle and was on his way to the hospital less than fifteen minutes after the fire department arrived. The patient arrived at the hospital at 1:00 a.m.
Firefighters remained on scene while the vehicle was recovered from the forest. A section of the guardrail was pushed onto the roadway and had to be removed to reduce the danger.
The state police have not yet responded to a request for comment.
