People shocked at how good the horror category is on the free new UK streaming service

When it comes to a new streaming service, many people have different criteria for what makes it great.

For some it’s about having great originals like The Mandalorian or Strange things.

For others it will be how many of the top classics you have, whether that’s TV like The bad news or movies like Moonlight.

In case anyone thinks that's what I meant: Breaking Bad doesn't exist.

For many, though, the benchmark for a streaming service is how many horror films it has that are so fucked up that you’d kill a Victorian child to show them one.

Good news then for British horror fans, as the library of a new, completely free streaming service could easily steal away large swaths of Victorian children.

The service in question is Tubi, a free Netflix competitor that launched in the UK this week.

Although the streamer has been around in the US for several years, the Rupert Murdoch-backed service has now opened in the UK.

Fans have noticed the sheer amount of horror movies being shown and decided to share that.

A horror fan named Jack posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) the following: “UK horror fanatics, Tubi has just launched here and I am honestly shocked at how amazing their catalogue is!

“From classic to cult to excellent horror choices, there is something for everyone! Oh and it’s FREE!!!”

This may be new to us in the UK, but American fans have been raving about Tubi’s horror section for years.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Tubi would surpass Disney+, Peacock, Max, and Paramount+ in viewership by May 2024.

A horror fan quoted the following on Twitter: “Because any self-respecting indie and horror fan (intelligent people) knows Tubi has the best selection.”

Another fan was even more direct in his assessment, tweeting:

“Tubi is THAT bitch and always will be. Every horror fan is fed by Tubi.”

However, one fan took his claims even further, saying, “Tubi is the best streaming service for horror movies and it’s free.”

Tubi’s UK offering may be more limited than Netflix’s, but it’s undeniably brilliant.

First, it has the 1992 version of Candyman – a cult classic that has inspired countless horror films over the past 30 years.

An r/horror post about the film on Reddit once received a comment that read: “This movie literally scares the hell out of me. As a 43 year old horror guy, I can’t say that about many others… but this one does.”

Add to that underrated bangers like Happy Death Day and the film that dominated online discussion when it came outWinnie the Pooh: Blood and Honeyand you have the makings of a great horror installment.
