Today, Thursday 4 July, millions of Britons will go to the polls to vote for who they think should be the UK’s next Prime Minister and government.
This is the first general election since the 2019 edition, which saw the Conservatives win and Boris Johnson become Prime Minister.
Now, after 14 years of Tory government, the latest polls suggest a Labour government could emerge.
Polling stations are open all day from 7am to 10pm. The first exit polls are announced at 10pm.
However, the final result will only be announced in the early morning.
To keep the public informed of the latest election results and information, broadcasters will air nightly election specials.

BBC coverage
The BBC will broadcast the 2024 election from 9.55pm to 6am, with Election 2024: The Results starting and running until 1pm.
Tonight’s coverage is presented by Laura Kuenssberg and Clive Myrie, who are joined by BBC Political Editor Chris Mason and Reeta Chakrabarti.
ITV coverage
ITV will begin coverage of the General Election from 9.50pm until 6am, with Good Morning Britain airing until 9.25am.
At 09:25 Elections 2024 Live: The Results starts. This broadcast lasts until 15:30 in the afternoon.
Tom Bradby will host the evening, his fourth time in the role. He will be joined by former Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon, George Osborne, Ed Balls, Robert Preston and many more.
Channel 4 coverage
Channel 4 presents Britain Decides with The Rest is Politics and Gogglebox, hosted by Krishnan Guru-Murthy and former Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis, from 9.45pm to 9am.
Alastair Campbell, Rory Stewart and some familiar faces from Gogglebox will be making an appearance.
Sky News
From 9pm to 9am, Sky News presents The Battle for Number 10: Election Breakfast, followed by Election Live with Sophy Ridge.
