Erik ten Hag to remain Manchester United manager after performance review

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has extended his contract until 2026, the club announced, with the deal expected to be made official soon.

The Dutchman’s position came under pressure during the disappointing 2023-24 Premier League season, which saw United finish eighth.

He changed the mood around the club by leading his team to FA Cup success – beating rivals Manchester City in the final in May – and United have now offered him a longer contract.

Ten Hag told the club’s website: “I am very pleased that we have reached an agreement with the club to continue our partnership.

“Looking back over the past two years, we can look back with pride on two trophies and the many examples of progress from where we were when I joined.

“However, we must also be clear that there is still a lot of work to be done to reach the level expected of Manchester United, which means competing for the English and European titles.

“In my discussions with the club we have found complete unity in our vision to achieve those goals, and we are all strongly committed to making that journey together.”

Ten Hag was appointed United manager in 2022 after impressing at Ajax.

He oversaw a League Cup victory – the club’s first trophy in six years – and a third-place finish in his first season, but last season’s performances were inconsistent.

At the end of the campaign, the balance was drawn up and, in light of the cup win, it was decided that Ten Hag would remain the manager.

The new deal is not a complete renewal of the 54-year-old’s contract terms, but extends his existing deal by 12 months. Ten Hag entered the final year of his contract.

The confirmation came in the same week that Dan Ashworth was finally appointed as United’s new sporting director, following months of negotiations with his previous employers Newcastle.

Ashworth said: “With two trophies in the last two seasons, Erik has cemented his record as one of the most consistently successful coaches in European football.

“The club’s evaluation of last season identified areas for improvement, but it also clearly concluded that Erik was the best partner for us to work with to improve standards and results.

“This group of players and staff have already shown they are capable of competing and winning at the top level – now we need to do that more consistently.

“With our football leadership team now strengthened, we look forward to working hand in hand with Erik to realise our shared ambitions for this football club.”
