A jury has found a man guilty of robbing the Beloit Bank and attempting to rob a nearby hotel. According to prosecutors, the man, identified as 35-year-old William Jones, entered the Beloit Bank on Main Street on January 10th, 2023. Wearing a mask and brandishing a firearm, he demanded money from the tellers. After obtaining a substantial sum, Jones fled the scene in a stolen vehicle. Investigators quickly identified Jones as a suspect through surveillance footage and witness statements. He was apprehended in a nearby town a few hours after the robbery. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence of Jones’s involvement, including his DNA found on the stolen vehicle and his cellphone records confirming his presence at the bank. The jury deliberated for several hours before finding Jones guilty of armed robbery and attempted armed robbery. JANESVILLE, Wis. (WIFR) – A 62-year-old Janesville man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of two theft-related crimes in Rock County. David Steven Gober was charged after investigators said he robbed the BMO Harris Bank on East Grand Avenue and attempted to rob the Hotel Goodwin on Public Avenue in Beloit on June 16, 2023. Investigators say Gober first robbed the bank around 5 p.m., handing a teller a note that said, “Give me all your money. I have a gun.” About five hours later, Gober attempted to rob the hotel and handed a note to an employee that read, “I have a gun, and this is a robbery. I have all the money in my hand.” On June 7, Gober was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison, followed by five years of extended supervision, for robbing the bank. He was also sentenced to 10 years of confinement, followed by five years of extended supervision, for the attempted theft from the hotel. He entered the hotel wearing a mask and demanded money from the front desk clerk. The clerk refused to give Smith money, and he fled the scene. Smith was arrested on January 17th.
