A motorist was arrested for allegedly hitting a 34-year-old pedestrian, fracturing her right knee and causing bruises, and then pushing and assaulting her when she started crying for help, near Mahavir Chowk on MG Road, police said. The driver was drunk at the time of the incident, police said.

The woman, identified as Sudesh Bhardwaj, was waiting to board an autorickshaw to reach MG Road Metro station around 5 pm on July 1 when the incident took place, police said. Bhardwaj worked on a contractual basis with the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and was returning home from Aurobindo Marg in Delhi.
A senior police official said, “Instead of helping her, the driver pushed her and even shouted that she was crying without any injury. Soon, commuters gathered at the spot to help the victim. Before anyone could catch him, he got into his SUV and fled from the spot.”

Bhardwaj said, “Bystanders tried to rush me to Civil Hospital, but I refused as my six-month-old daughter was waiting for me at home. Some commuters took me in a taxi, in which I managed to reach the scene. My husband was returning from a pilgrimage when he heard about the incident. I am currently admitted to Fortis Hospital in Delhi. Doctors will perform a surgery on Friday to repair my knee.”
Inspector Anil Kumar, Sector 14 police officer, said, “The driver was completely drunk and could not even stand properly at the time of the incident. We are scanning CCTV footage to find out the registration number of the vehicle and arrest him.”
Following the woman’s complaint, an FIR was registered against the unidentified driver at Sector 14 police station on Wednesday under Section 125(a) (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and Section 281 (reckless driving or driving on public road) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
