They will remain with Shane for the foreseeable future. The Irish student community in Chicago has rallied around Campbell, offering assistance and prayers. The GoFundMe page has also been shared widely to raise awareness and gather financial support. Shane’s family expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support during this difficult time. Like many Irish students, Shane went to Chicago to work during the summer when the incident occurred and was left fighting for his life.
He has been a patient at John H Stroger Hospital in Cook County since June 5.
Family and friends have started a GoFundMe page to help him with his medical needs, as his insurance does not cover his rehabilitation costs.
They said: “Shane’s American dream turned into a nightmare when the taxi he was a passenger in was involved in a horrific car crash.
“Shane was initially placed in an induced coma and intubated.
In addition to multiple broken bones, Shane suffered more serious injuries to his abdomen, for which he has undergone ten surgeries to date, and may need more in the future.
“Fortunately he has improved, is awake and can regain his memory, but the recovery will take a long time.
“He will require several more weeks of medical care at John H Stroger Hospital in Cook County, followed by months of rehabilitation.”
Shane is receiving support from his twin brother Niall, who was also in Chicago for the summer, and from his mother Jean, who flew to Chicago from Ireland to be with him and will be there for the next few months.
His sister Grace and father David live in Kells for the time being.
On the donation page, the family wrote: “Shane is a much loved son, brother, colleague and teammate within our community.
“Shane has shown great courage in his progress so far and is determined to make a full recovery and return home.”
The 22-year-old student underwent surgery on Wednesday, July 4, and according to his mother, Jean Campbell, “everything went well.”
She added: “He’s recovering. Shane is sleeping it off now, we’re giving his body some rest.
“Shane’s surgery involved inserting a small plate to support and repair his sternum, which will give him many benefits. It will allow him to breathe on his own and with ease.
“On Independence Day, Shane is definitely a fighter.”
