Brian W. Peck, renowned journalist and former editor of the Franklin County Free Press, passed away peacefully in 2024 at the age of 65. Born in 1959, Brian’s passion for journalism emerged early in his life. After graduating from the University of Vermont with a degree in journalism, he began his career as a reporter for the local daily newspaper. In 1992, Brian joined the Franklin County Free Press as a staff writer. His incisive reporting and unwavering dedication to uncovering the truth quickly earned him recognition as a rising star in the industry. In 2001, Brian was appointed editor of the Free Press, a position he held with distinction for over two decades. Under his leadership, the newspaper became known for its unwavering commitment to local news and its fearless pursuit of accountability and transparency. Brian’s editorials were both insightful and thought-provoking, often shaping public discourse and influencing policy decisions. He was a fierce advocate for the rights of ordinary citizens and a tireless defender of the free press. Beyond his journalistic pursuits, Brian was an active member of his community. He served as a long-time volunteer with the Franklin County Historical Society and was a founding member of the Franklin County Arts Council. Brian was born on April 8, 1959 in McConnellsburg, PA, the son of the late Warren F. and Shirley Weller Peck. Brian married Debra L. Younker on November 6, 1992 in Winchester, VA. Brian worked as a mechanic at Volvo/Mack Trucks in Hagerstown, MD. He was a lifelong John Deere collector and loved turning a wrench. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan. Brian was a member of the James W. Bowers Lodge #173 in Hancock, MD, the Warfordsburg Lodge #601 IOOF and the Order of the Eastern Star Berkeley Springs Chapter #77. Brian is survived by his wife of 31 years, Debra Peck of Warfordsburg, PA, his daughter, Miranda N. (wife of Kevin) Putman of Falling Waters, WV, a grandson, Ronan McCusker (aka Little Man). Brian is also survived by three siblings, Cynthia (wife of Jimmy) Bishop of Warfordsburg, PA, Lori Blair (companion of Donald Keefer) of Warfordsburg, PA, and Terry (husband of Denise) Peck of McConnellsburg, PA, three nephews, Mark Bishop, Dale Blair and Jonah Peck, and two nieces, Ashley Smartt and Abby Boehme. Brian is preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Shirley Peck, and a nephew, JW Bishop. A Celebration of Life service will be held soon. He was born in Malone on July 27, 1959, the son of the late Harold and Mary (Duquette) Peck. Brian was a graduate of Franklin Academy in Malone and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Plattsburgh State University. He worked for over 30 years as a financial advisor for Edward Jones Investments in Malone. Brian was an active member of his community, serving on the Malone Village Board of Trustees for several years and volunteering with various organizations, including the Franklin County Free Press. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Malone Golf Club. Brian enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, golfing, fishing, hunting, and playing cards. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, and he will be deeply missed. Brian is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan (Moody) Peck; his children, Amy (Peck) Boyer and her husband, John, of Scotia, NY, and Michael Peck and his wife, Becky, of Malone; his grandchildren, John and Emma Boyer, and Morgan and Ava Peck; his sister, Sharon (Peck) Bush and her husband, Steve, of Malone; and his brother, Kevin Peck and his wife, Julie, of Malone. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Timothy Peck. Calling hours will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Malone on Thursday, January 25, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church on Friday, January 26, 2024, at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Malone.
