The diet is high in fish, olive oil, and vegetables. Researchers followed 800 cancer patients for 13 years after they were given a clean slate and found that the survivors who started the diet at the end of their treatment were 32% less likely to die prematurely. The risk of heart-related death decreased by 60%. Researchers believe that the high source of antioxidants in the Mediterranean diet plays a role in the advance in lifespan. They also discovered a link between the causes of heart disease and cancer and stated that they share the same molecular mechanisms. The team wants to investigate specific foods from the Mediterranean diet in more detail. Foods that recent research has shown pose a risk for cancer include processed meat, alcohol, red meat, and sugary and fried foods.

The 13-year study found that the diet, which is high in fish, olive oil and vegetables, could benefit people with cancer.

The study found that survivors who started the diet at the end of their treatment were 32% less likely to die prematurely, as reported in the New York Post.

In addition, the specific risk of heart-related death decreased by 60% after treatment.

Italian researchers made their findings after studying 800 cancer patients in the years after they were given a clean slate. They followed their eating habits over that 13-year period, starting in the late 2000s.

The Mediterranean diet is based on healthy foods like fruits, clean proteins and olive oil. Researcher Chiara Tonelli believes that the high source of antioxidants plays a role in the “advance” in lifespan.

The research team also discovered a link between the causes of heart disease and cancer.

“That different chronic diseases, such as tumors and heart disease, actually share the same molecular mechanisms,” said researcher Maria Benedetta Donati, as reported by U.S. News & World Report.

“This is known in the (medical) literature as ‘common soil,’ namely a common basis from which these two groups of conditions emerge,” she added.

The team now wants to investigate specific foods from the Mediterranean diet in more detail.

Foods that recent research has shown pose a risk for cancer include processed meat, alcohol, red meat, and sugary and fried foods.

“The increase in cancer risk from processed meat is quite modest,” Dr Duane Mellor, spokesman for the British Dietetic Association (BDA), told the Daily mail.
