Prince William is no stranger to the royal spotlight and media attention, but he’ll reveal another side of himself in an upcoming documentary series.
Unlike his brother Prince Harry, who gave viewers an insight into royal life with his wife Meghan Markle in a Netflix documentary last year, William will be championing a cause close to his heart: ending homelessness.
The new documentary, titled “Prince William: We Can End Homelessness,” will air in two parts this fall on ITV and ITVX.
The series highlights the Homewards programme, a UK-wide charity initiative that aims to help the homeless and support people who have first-hand experience of life on the streets, the Mirror reports.
The series focuses on the first year of the five-year initiative, documenting the launch of the charity and highlighting the efforts of advocates and project leaders to tackle homelessness in six key locations: Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, Lambeth, Newport, Northern Ireland and Sheffield.
Here’s everything you need to know about the series….
What is the name of the series and when will it air?
Prince William will star in a powerful new documentary titled “Prince William: We Can End Homelessness,” which will air in two one-hour episodes on ITV1 and ITVX later this year.
The exact premiere date is still a secret, but the film is expected to hit theaters sometime between September and November.
Who’s behind the camera for this Royal series?
The production baton for this compelling series has been passed to Mindhouse, with BAFTA-winning director Leo Burley at the helm and Arron Fellows serving as executive producer. Burley is no stranger to impactful documentaries, having previously directed “The Real Mo Farah” and “My Dad, the Peace Deal and Me”.
Leo shared his insights into the project, saying: “Over the past year we have followed Prince William and The Royal Foundation through the first year of the Homewards programme and have heard some incredibly moving stories from people across the country experiencing homelessness.”
He went on to explain the breadth of the issue covered in the documentary: “From street homelessness in Newport to families living in temporary accommodation in Sheffield and homeless young people in Aberdeen, the documentary paints a picture of homelessness in the UK today, working with many people who never expected to live a life without a home.”
Burley also emphasised the positive impact of the royal family’s involvement: “Everyone we’ve filmed with is delighted with the attention Prince William and Homewards are bringing to the UK’s homelessness crisis.”
What motivates Prince William to be so committed to combating homelessness?
Prince William’s commitment to ending homelessness, a cause close to his heart, can be traced back to the influence of his mother, Princess Diana.
From an early age, Diana introduced her sons to life outside the royal bubble, including discreet visits to homeless shelters throughout their childhood.
These experiences gave the young prince a deep sense of empathy and understanding, leading him to become patron of Centrepoint, a charity that supports people living in difficult circumstances.
In 2009, Prince William experienced the harsh reality of life on the streets first-hand when he slept on the streets as part of a campaign to raise awareness of homelessness, The Guardian reported.
When Centrepoint CEO Seyi Obakin challenged him to spend a night on the streets, William was accompanied by his then private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton. The experience was so authentic that they narrowly avoided being run over by a street cleaner.
A St James’s Palace spokesman told of their illuminating experience after a night on the streets, saying the royal trio barely slept and were given only brief moments of rest.
“Prince William has learned from this experience how important it is to tackle all the issues that drive people into and remain homeless, from drug addiction to mental health problems,” the spokesman said.
When was Homewards founded?
The Homewards initiative was launched in June 2023 by Prince William, together with The Royal Foundation, with a clear mission to transform homelessness into a rare, short-term and non-recurring situation.
Working closely with six strategic sites across the UK, Homewards promotes ground-breaking approaches that can be scaled up across the country. The ambition is to create deep and lasting change, and ultimately end homelessness, once and for all.
