Driver Charged with DUI After Slumping Over Wheel in Springfield

A driver has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI) after being found slumped over the wheel in Springfield. According to police, officers responded to a report of an unresponsive driver in a parked vehicle on Main Street around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Upon arrival, officers found the suspect, a 42-year-old male, unconscious at the wheel of his car. The engine was still running, and the vehicle was in drive. Officers attempted to wake the suspect, but he was unresponsive. They administered Narcan, an opioid reversal drug, which had no immediate effect. Medical personnel arrived on scene and transported the suspect to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, where he was treated for possible drug use. A subsequent investigation revealed that the suspect had been driving under the influence of an unknown substance. He was later charged with DUI, operating under the influence of drugs, and other traffic violations. The suspect is currently being held at the Hampden County Correctional Center pending his arraignment. His name has not been released. Police are reminding the public that driving under the influence is a serious crime and can have deadly consequences. When officers arrived, they found 35-year-old Manuel Rodriguez behind the wheel of a running car. Rodriguez was unresponsive and had to be shaken awake by officers. Police say Rodriguez’s speech was slurred and he smelled of alcohol. He was arrested and taken to the Springfield Municipal Jail. Rodriguez was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving. He was later released on bail.
