Initial Investigation According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, a 32-year-old Salem, Wisconsin man driving a stolen Lexus GS400 fled from a Pleasant Prairie police officer at approximately 4:30 p.m. The pursuit began near the intersection of Kilbourne Road and Russell Road in the unincorporated Zion area. Reckless Driving and Fatal Collision Despite the police pursuit, the driver continued to drive recklessly, ignoring a red light at the intersection of Kilbourne Road and Route 173 in Newport Township. The Lexus collided with a GMC Yukon, resulting in the driver’s death. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Injuries to GMC Passengers Eight individuals in the GMC Yukon sustained injuries. A 51-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The driver, a 30-year-old man, and six other passengers, ranging in age from 8 to 28, received non-life-threatening injuries. Driver’s Background The deceased driver has been identified as Tyler Johnson of Salem, Wisconsin. Autopsy results revealed that he died of blunt force trauma from the crash. Johnson had a suspended driver’s license, an active warrant for methamphetamine possession in Lake County, and was suspected of involvement in local burglaries. NEWPORT TOWNSHIP, Illinois (WLS) — A high-speed chase from Wisconsin to the northern suburbs of Chicago ended in a fatal crash Saturday afternoon, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Preliminary police investigation reveals that a 32-year-old Salem, Wisconsin man was driving a stolen Lexus GS400 in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The driver fled at a high rate of speed and a Pleasant Prairie police officer pursued the vehicle using a tire iron near the intersection of Kilbourne Road and Russell Road in the unincorporated Zion area.
According to the sheriff’s office, the man continued to drive recklessly and ignored a red light at the intersection of Kilbourne Road and Route 173 in Newport Township, where the Lexus collided with a GMC Yukon.
The driver of the Lexus died in the crash. There was no one else in the vehicle.
Eight people in the GMC were injured.
A 51-year-old passenger was seriously injured and transported to a local hospital.
The driver of the GMC, a 30-year-old man, and six other passengers — a 20-year-old woman, a 28-year-old man, a 15-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl — all suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Lexus has been identified as 32-year-old Tyler Johnson of Salem, Wisconsin. Autopsy results from the Lake County coroner’s office indicate Johnson died of blunt force trauma from the crash.
According to the sheriff’s office, Johnson had a suspended driver’s license, an active warrant out of Lake County for methamphetamine possession and was a suspect in several burglaries in the area.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team is investigating the case.
