Rollover along the EB exit lane 249 of I-44

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin police are releasing more details about a deadly tractor-trailer crash that shut down traffic on I-44 Tuesday.

In a press release Wednesday, JPD identified the victim as Mario Andres Guerrero Suarez, 58, of Blue Springs, Missouri.

The truck Suarez was involved in the crash was owned by Harcros Trucking of Kansas City, Kansas. A caustic chemical being carried by the truck created a hazardous condition when the vehicle crashed near the Exit 13 marker.

Joplin Fire Department units were able to clear the wreckage and reopen the road to normal traffic before 5 p.m.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing.

Deadly rollover impacts traffic on I-44 EB

JOPLIN, Mo. — A deadly truck rollover brought traffic to a standstill on eastbound I-44 Tuesday morning.

Around 10 a.m., a call came in for a semi-trailer blocking the road at mile marker 13 near Prigmore in the eastbound lane. Preliminary information from the Joplin Police Department indicates the semi was traveling eastbound on I-44 when it left the road at mile marker 13, struck the median cables and overturned.

The driver of the semi-trailer is the only fatality in the accident. Their identity is currently being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The scene was visible from MoDOT’s Traveler Map camera ’44 & 249 in Joplin’ (below).

Joplin Fire crews are responding to the area, which is currently a HAZMAT situation. Authorities were able to clear and reopen the lanes shortly before 5 p.m.

The Joplin Police Department Major Crash Team is still investigating the incident.
