When you arrive at Barangaroo House, staring at the three floors and deciding where to start your adventure can probably be a little daunting, so let’s start simple. Set your eyes on the ground floor. No matter which way you came from, you’re looking at House Bar.

This is the most accessible spot, with a literally open-door layout that really makes you feel like you can just walk in and grab a table. Word to the wise, though: during the post-work rush, booking is a must. House Bar is a classic Sydney waterfront hangout, with benches made for a relaxed crowd lounging in the sun.

There’s a good mix of beers and ciders on tap, a wine list with over 15 choices ranging from red, white, sparkling and rosé, and of course cocktails. We started simple with one choice from the cocktail menu, the Pear Me Away. Made with Bacardi Blanca, Poire Williams, salted caramel, coconut and citrus, it was the perfect balance of sweet and citrus. It reminded us of a margarita with a caramel aftertaste.

Food-wise, House Bar is simple and satisfying. The vibe? Casual Japanese, great for a hearty post-work meal or a slightly longer-than-normal work lunch. Your very tasty entrees range from edamame and karaage to hot chips and calamari. Mains come in the form of sandos (chicken, beef, shrimp and crab or mushroom), salads and bowls (chicken katsu curry, wagyu donburi or salmon poke). Our pick? The latter — they’re generously portioned and deliciously fresh.
