If you’re booking a trip, these four tips can help you find a good deal on a place to stay.

Problem Solved

NEW BEDFORD — Whether you are planning a trip to the downtown area or just need an escape from your own home, there are several hidden gems on airbnb waiting to be booked.

Featuring unique and fascinating accommodations, such as historic buildings filled with the city’s rich history, they are all just steps away from the restaurants, shops and the renowned New Bedford Whaling Museum and National Park.

According to the website, Airbnb was founded in 2008, by roommates Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia in San Francisco. The concept originated when the two were struggling to afford their rent and realized that an upcoming design conference would cause hotel prices to skyrocket in the area.

They decided to create a website, originally called “AirBed & Breakfast,” where they could rent out air mattresses in their apartment to conference attendees. The idea was met with initial skepticism, but the first three guests ended up paying $80 a night to stay on the air mattresses and the concept took off.

Examples of the most unique airbnb stays include a luxurious Treehouse in Atlanta, Georgia, a private island in Lake of the Woods, Minnesota, a Geodesic Dome in the Mojave Desert, California, a converted Church in New York City, New York, a houseboat on Lake Union in Seattle, Washington and an igloo in East Burke, Vermont.

By 2011, Airbnb had achieved a major milestone by booking over one million nights. In 2019, Airbnb went public with a valuation of over $100 billion, making it one of the largest tech IPOs in history.
