The second, third, and fourth phases of the port are set to be completed by 2028, solidifying Kerala’s position as the container trading hub of India. These phases will witness investments worth Rs 10,000 crores, creating 5,000 new jobs and establishing a port-based job training center at a cost of Rs 50 crores. “Vizhinjam’s transformation into a full-fledged port will attract investments, generate employment, and enhance its significance on the international stage,” stated Chief Minister Vijayan. Despite the central government’s limited contribution of Rs 818 crores to the port’s development, which stands at Rs 8,867 crores, the state government has borne the majority of the expenses, amounting to Rs 5,595 crores. “Vizhinjam is the state port, and we are committed to its success,” emphasized Vijayan. “Our aim is to elevate Kerala to the ranks of developed nations.” Industrial Corridor and Infrastructure Development Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports, outlined the plans for the port’s expansion, which include the construction of a modern fishing port, an outer ring road, a seafood park, cruise tourism facilities, and an industrial corridor. These initiatives are expected to create 2,000 jobs in manufacturing and operations, with an additional 5,500 employment opportunities in the future. Public Enthusiasm The arrival of the San Fernando was met with great enthusiasm from the public, who flocked to Vizhinjam to witness the historic event. Balloons were released, and the Chief Minister took a commemorative photograph in front of the ship. Gifts were presented to the Russian captain and his crew. The Danish company Maersk’s ship is scheduled to return to Colombo today after unloading containers at Vizhinjam. The development of Vizhinjam Port is a testament to the state government’s commitment to progress and economic growth. It is poised to transform Kerala into a thriving economic hub, attracting investments and creating opportunities for its citizens.

“As Vizhinjam becomes a full-fledged port, there will be investments worth Rs 10,000 crores. 5,000 jobs will be created. A port-based job training centre will be started at a cost of Rs 50 crores. Vizhinjam will also benefit the neighbouring countries. The country’s international importance will further increase,” he said.
“Of the Rs 8,867 crore expenditure on the port, Rs 5,595 crore is borne by the state. The central share is only Rs 818 crore. So Vizhinjam is the state port. The Centre has proposed Rs 8 crore for rehabilitation, while the state has spent Rs 100 crore. A package of Rs 5,000 crore has been requested in the central budget for the port. This is when a dream comes true. The aim is not to rest anymore, but to take Kerala to the level of developed countries,” he added.
The ship was received by the Chief Minister, Union Ports Minister Sarbanand Sonowal and state ministers yesterday morning. The Chief Minister unveiled the plaque marking the arrival of the first mother ship. The ceremony was made more festive with chendamelam and cheers.

Karan Adani, Managing Director of Adani Ports, said that a modern fishing port, an outer ring road to the port, a seafood park, cruise tourism facilities and an industrial corridor will be built. 2,000 jobs will be created in manufacturing and operations. 5,500 people will be employed in the future. Hundreds of youth will be trained at the skill development centre.
