Emig was an avid sprint car driver who regularly raced at speedways around the state, including Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown.
He operated under the brand name “Beaver Creek Racing 33” and drove a sprint car decorated as a tribute to United Hook & Ladder 33, where family members volunteered, and to the family restaurant Emig’s 81, located on Route 30 near Abbottstown.
According to Emig’s obituary, Emig began his racing career at the age of 69 and raced 410 sprint cars by the age of 18.
“Riley Emig was not only a remarkable talent on the track, but also a shining example in our racing community,” Lincoln Speedway said in a tribute to Emig.
Emig was named Rookie of the Year at Lincoln Speedway in 2021 for his 358 sprint race and again in 2022 for his 410 sprint race.
“The Central PA Racing Community lost a great friend today,” said BAPS Motor Speedway in York Haven.
“Riley was a young, up-and-coming racer in central Pennsylvania and will be greatly missed by the racing community,” Williams Grove Speedway said in a statement.
“Everyone at Port Royal Speedway would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Riley Emig,” Port Royal Speedway said in a statement.
On Monday, a monument to the young sprint car driver was erected near the scene of the accident, on the side of the road overlooking Hanover.
A toy car in the shape of a matchbox and a small motorcycle were placed among the bouquets of flowers.
“Fly high,” was written on the car’s box.
A memorial service for Emig will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 100 East Water Street in Abbottstown, his obituary states.
According to Emig’s obituary, donations in Emig’s memory may be made to Driven to Save Lives, an organization that supports organ donation, located at 3760 Guion Road, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46222.
