West End Beagle Club Hosts Kayak Rat Race
The West End Beagle Club will hold its second annual Kayak Rat Race on Saturday, June 15. The race, held on the club’s man-made pond at 110 Clark St., was a popular event last year, attracting approximately 100 spectators. Organizer Wendy McCullough hopes this year’s event will showcase the club’s pond, increase revenue, and boost membership. The 5-acre pond, built in 1964 for fishing derbies, is an ideal location for the quarter-mile kayak race. The race starts at 1:00 PM with participant check-in beginning at 12:30 PM. Racers must sign a liability waiver and wear life jackets. Participants must be 18 years or older or 16 years and older with parental consent. Cash prize amounts depend on the number of participants in each race. There is a $10 entry fee for racers and a $5 per vehicle fee for spectators.
Live Music and Food
Local favorite Danny LeBlanc will provide live music from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Food will be available from noon to 3:00 PM.
Raffles and Prizes
Raffles will be held with gift hampers and draft beer as prizes.
Registration
Racers are encouraged to pre-register by calling 978-632-9792 before Friday, June 14. However, registration is also available on race day at noon if spaces are still available. Participants can drop off their kayaks at the club on the night before the race. Members will be present overnight to watch over the boats.Gardner resident Danny LeBlanc competed in the kayak race at the West End Beagle Club recently. The race was held on a 1.5-mile course on the Gardner River. LeBlanc finished the race in a time of 12:34, which was good for second place in his age group. “It was a great race,” said LeBlanc. “The course was challenging, but I was able to stay focused and finish strong.” LeBlanc has been kayaking for five years. He enjoys the sport because it is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors. He also appreciates the challenge of competing in races. “I love the competition,” said LeBlanc. “It’s always fun to see how I stack up against other kayakers.” LeBlanc is a member of the West End Beagle Club. The club offers a variety of kayaking programs, including races, clinics, and tours. LeBlanc encourages other people to try kayaking. “It’s a great sport for people of all ages and abilities,” said LeBlanc. “It’s a great way to get exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and meet new people.”
