Shivam Dube has been widely criticised for his underperformance in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the US and the Caribbean. Cricket analysts have even termed him as the weakest link in India’s batting line-up.
However, in the final against South Africa, Dube proved his worth when India were in trouble at 103-4 after 13.3 overs. Under pressure, Dube came to Virat Kohli, who was also struggling to find his rhythm.
He played a crucial knock of 27 from 16 balls, hitting three sixes and a four. His partnership of 57 with Kohli for the fifth wicket was crucial in stabilising the innings.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, the hard-hitting batsman spoke about his experiences during the T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies and how he remained calm despite the immense pressure.
He also thanked captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid for their support, which kept him motivated throughout the match.

The T20 World Cup was a tough one for you, but your innings in the final was crucial. How do you see that?
The World Cup journey has taught me a lot. The final was a pivotal moment and I am glad I was able to contribute to the team’s efforts. Every match in the T20 World Cup has been a learning experience and the support of my teammates and fans has kept me motivated. At the end of the day, it’s all about giving your best for the team and making every opportunity count.
You were part of the squad throughout the tournament despite struggling with form. What do you think of the support you got from captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid?

It was both challenging and motivating. It was a test of my mental strength and determination. The unwavering support of our captain and coach was incredible. They supported me constantly, encouraging me to stay positive and keep working hard. Their confidence in my abilities and their guidance helped me to stay focused and believe in myself. This experience has made me stronger and more determined to improve and contribute to the success of the team in the future.
What was going through your mind during the tournament?

During the tournament my mind was focused on staying positive and doing my best every chance I got. It was a journey full of challenges and triumphs, especially during difficult times, but those moments only fueled my determination to keep going. I knew I had to stay mentally strong and have confidence in my abilities.
The tournament was intense and very competitive, which motivated me to grow as a player. The support of my teammates, coaches and fans kept me motivated. Overall, it was a valuable learning experience and I am grateful for the opportunity to represent my country on such a big stage.
During your recent tour to Zimbabwe you gave away your Man of the Match award money to the ground staff in Zimbabwe. What prompted that decision?
The ground staff in Zimbabwe did an exceptional job and ensured that we had excellent playing conditions. Their hard work and dedication often goes unnoticed, so I wanted to show my appreciation and gratitude for their efforts. By giving away my Man of the Match award, I hoped to acknowledge their contribution and support them in some small way. It was a gesture to emphasise the importance of every individual who makes the game possible, and I believe it is essential to recognise and appreciate their hard work.
