Patrick Vieira has stepped down as coach of Strasbourg, the Ligue 1 club announced on Thursday, after his name was linked to the vacant position of coach of the United States men’s national team.

Vieira, who won the 1998 World Cup with France, joined Strasbourg last season and is leaving “by mutual agreement”, the French club said.

Vieira, 48, coached New York City in MLS between 2016 and 2018 and there have been widespread reports that he could return to the US to succeed Gregg Berhalter.

Berhalter was fired as coach of the United States after the team was eliminated in the first round of the Copa America.

Vieira was asked about the national team job last week after Strasbourg lost 4-0 to Turkish giants Fernebahce in a pre-season friendly.

“The United States? Oh no, my focus is 100% on Alsace (Strasbourg),” he told a local newspaper in the northeastern region of France.
