The 45-year-old suspect was arrested after the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) administered a urine test as part of its ongoing checks on tour and public transport vehicles at the Hutan Kampung Toll Plaza (northbound) around 4am this morning. According to Stien Van Lutam, director of Kedah JPJ, the suspect had a history of drug-related offenses and was transporting 42 passengers from Penang to Thailand at the time of his arrest. The suspect was detained under section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983, while a second driver was provided to continue the journey. During the operation, which commenced yesterday, a total of 1,116 vehicles were inspected. Of these, 138 faced enforcement measures and 329 warnings were issued for road safety violations. Furthermore, three motorcycles and a bus were seized, and six express buses were subjected to measures under the Tourism Industry Act (Act 482). Common JPJ violations included driving without a valid license or expired license, expired road tax, technical defects, and lack of car insurance. Offenses under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482) include employing unlicensed guides and using unlicensed tour vehicles. Stien Van Lutam, director of Kedah JPJ, said the 45-year-old man was arrested after the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) conducted a urine test on him as part of its checks on tour and public transport vehicles at the Hutan Kampung Toll Plaza (northbound) around 4am this morning.
“The suspect was travelling from Penang to Thailand with 42 passengers and was also found to have a history of drug-related offences,” he told reporters today.
The suspect was detained under section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 while the tour bus continued its journey with a second driver.
During the operation that began yesterday, a total of 1,116 vehicles were checked. Of these, 138 vehicles were confronted with enforcement measures and 329 warnings were issued for non-compliance with road safety rules and regulations.
According to Stien, three motorcycles and a bus were also seized, while six express buses were subject to measures under the 1992 Tourism Industry Act (Act 482).
The most common JPJ violations are driving without a license, an expired license, expired road tax, technical defects and no car insurance.
Offences under the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482) include failing to use the services of a licensed guide and a licensed tour vehicle.
Stein stressed that the JPJ takes these matters seriously and will not tolerate any violations by coach and public transport drivers.
“We are not taking action to inconvenience the public, but to ensure that accident and death rates on the road are reduced. In addition, we want to ensure the safety of passengers and other road users and we will continue these operations regularly,” he added.
