We call it: There are six types of friends everyone needs in their life.
And when we say there are six different types of friends, we don’t mean Ross, Rachel, and the rest of the Central Perk gang. We’re talking about the vibe they have and the role they each play in your life.
We all have that one friend who is always up for a spontaneous adventure, for example. Then there is the one who gives the best advice, and even the one who makes us laugh until we cry.
Regardless of the role they play, different types of partners enrich our lives in different, equally important ways – and make our lives a lot better.
1. The meme friend.
Now, this isn’t to tarnish the legitimate friendship you have with this person, but we all have a meme friend — someone we communicate with best online, not through words but through other people’s visual take on… well, everything. They’re the one who just gets with your sense of humor, and they will happily receive your umpteenth DM of the day.
Very few actual words need to be spoken with your meme friend, and that’s something special. Your friendship doesn’t take itself too seriously, and your meme friend is always there to add a laugh to the most mundane, monotonous day.
2. The distant friend.
When you first read the term “distant friend,” it might sound like a bit of a snide remark. But listen up, because the distant friend is not a bad friend. In fact, there are a few different interpretations of what “distant” means in this context.
First, it could be a physically distant friend who lives on the other side of the world. You may not see them as often as you would like, but when you do, it is as if no time has passed.
The other type of distant friend is the one who is a bit ~offline~, so to speak. They’re not great at texting, sharing memes isn’t really their thing, and phone calls make them anxious. So yeah. They may be a bit hard to pin down, but once you see them in person, your friendship comes to life.
In the case of a distant friend, distance really does make the heart grow fonder.
3. The chaos friend.
Ah, the chaos friend, the one who brings some spice to our lives. They’re always hysterically late to catch up, but they have a crazy story about why they couldn’t make it in time: They won a last-minute holiday to Fiji! They got stuck in a lift! Their cat had a mental breakdown! You know the ones.
As fickle as the chaos friend can be, they are endearing in their quest to get through the day without getting embroiled in another scandal. We love them for all the drama and can’t wait to hear about their next misadventure.

4. The friend who fills cups.
Do you have a friend in your life that feeds your soul? Same. Hold on to them.
The friend who fills your cups is the one who builds you up, gives you the best advice and makes you feel great every time you see them. They are great listeners, they never judge and they are interested in your opinion too.
This is the unicorn friend, and chances are they’re your number one BFF (and… everyone else’s, they’re just that good). Connect with them whenever you get the chance, and make sure to fill their cup, too!
5. The friend who spills tea.
She always gosh, they know a billion and one people, and they’re the buddy you go to when you’re DETAILSThat person you went to high school with and haven’t seen in years? Tea-spiller knows exactly what they’re up to, and yes, they went on a date with your last Hinge match in 2017.
The friend who spills tea is also the one you call when it’s time for a glass of wine and a long steam session. They’re a safe place to vent. Just be aware that if you serve them tea, they might just offer it to someone else.
6. The radar friend.
As we get older, our circle of friends can get smaller, but the radar friend is a perfect example of someone you connect with because they are close. They are on your radar.
It’s a useful friendship: your paths cross regularly and you have a connection. Maybe you see them every week at pilates, or maybe they’ve moved in next door and have a toddler the same age as your own child.
Does this make them less of a good friend? No way! They just happen to be awesome and useful friend. The radar friend is fun, usually around, and a great person to spend some social time with during the chaos of the week.
