According to data released, Barwani district has the highest enrolment with over 2.4 lakh students from classes 1 to 12. Other tribal districts, including Khargone, Jhabua, Anuppur, Shahdol, Betul, Alirajpur, and Dindori, also ranked higher than many non-tribal areas. Notably, only Ashoknagar and Bhind from tribal districts are among the bottom 10 performers. Overall Enrolment Decline However, overall student enrolment in the state has declined compared to the previous year. As of June 16, only 1,141,10,911 students were enrolled in government and private schools for the 2024-25 academic year, representing an 84.8% enrolment rate. Government schools have achieved an enrolment ratio of 87%, but still fall short of the 100% target set by the Ministry of Education. Significant Dropouts and Transition Loss Alarmingly, 23.73 lakh students have dropped out of schools from classes 1 to 12 across Madhya Pradesh. There has been a transition loss in all classes, with a particularly significant decline in enrolment from classes 9 to 12. Government Intervention In response to the dropouts and enrolment shortfall, the Ministry of Education has instructed officials to reach out to all eligible children and ensure their enrolment. The ministry has also ordered the mapping of enrolled students. Despite challenges, tribal districts have demonstrated a commendable commitment to education. Their success provides encouragement in striving to improve school attendance and reduce dropouts throughout the state.
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Schools in the tribal districts of the state have recorded higher enrolment percentages compared to other regions. Despite a worrying trend of dropouts, where 23.73 lakh students have dropped out of schools from classes 1 to 12 across the state, tribal areas have shown resilience and improvement. In every district of the state, student enrolment has declined this year compared to the previous year.
Barwani district emerged as the leader with 2,40,407 students enrolled in classes 1 to 12 for the 2024-25 session, though it was a slight decline from 2,57,202 in the previous year. Other districts like Khargone stood at 8th with 3,04,021 enrollments, Jhabua at 10th with 2,42,690, Anuppur at 11th with 1,11,565, Shahdol at 14th with 1,78,420, Betul at 25th with 2,31,037, Alirajpur at 37th with 1,32,126 and Dindori at 29th with 1,19,982 enrollments. Among the tribal districts, only Ashoknagar and Bhind feature in the bottom 10, at 46th and 47th positions respectively.
On the other hand, districts like Bhopal and Indore were at 52nd and 51st positions. As many as 1,378,4369 students were enrolled in both private and government schools in the state for the academic year 2023-24. The new academic session for 2024-25 began on April 1 and as of June 16, only 1,141,10,911 students were enrolled.
Following the alarming drop in enrollment, the Ministry of Education has instructed officials to achieve the 100 percent target and enroll children immediately. The ministry has also instructed officials to begin mapping the enrolled children.
General registrations are down
The total enrolment for the academic year 2024-25 stands at 84.8 per cent compared to the previous year, with over 15.65 lakh students missing out. Government schools have achieved an enrolment ratio of 87 per cent, reflecting a shortfall of 8.18 lakh. Enrolment for classes 9 to 12 has suffered particularly, with a decline of 8.08 lakh students.
Transition loss in all classes
There has been a transition loss in all classes in the state. Compared to the previous year, there is a total deficit of 6.63 lakh students in class 1 in both government and private schools. The transition loss from class 5 to 6 is 1.87 lakh. From class 8 to 9, the total deficit is 2.85 lakh and from class 10 to 11, it is 2.72 lakh.
