A retired Health Service Executive doctor was found to have false insurance and tax details on his car, Tullamore Crown Court heard.

Basava Siddalingappa (67), Droim Liath, Collins Lane, Tullamore, was banned from driving for two years for a number of traffic offences committed at Droim Liath, Muiniagh, Tullamore on December 20 last year.

Police Constable Noel Tier told the court he saw the driver while on patrol in Tullamore and noted the suspect had a learner’s permit but no ‘L’ plates on his registration.

Garda Tier also said he noticed that the tax and insurance discs on the vehicle were poor quality copies and not original.

According to police, the driver immediately admitted he had not paid taxes or insurance and the vehicle was impounded.

The man was given an alcohol test, but he appeared to be sober.

The court ruled that the driver had no previous convictions.

When Mr Siddalingappa appeared before Judge Michael Connellan, he was represented by barrister Aisling Maloney, who said he was a novice driver who had tried to pass the test ten times.

The car he was driving on the date of the violations was parked and he had only been out with it that night. The car was for his daughter.

As for the discs, the man said a friend had suggested he put them in the car window.

The accused was an audiologist with the HSE, but Ms Maloney sought legal aid for him because he was in arrears on his mortgage and his house was in negative equity and he wanted to sell it.

Mr Siddalingappa himself stated in court that he received a pension of €450 from his work as a doctor and in addition received a state pension of €450, but that the mortgage amounted to €1,650.

In addition to the two-year driving ban, Judge Connellan imposed a €750 fine for driving without insurance and gave the man six months to pay the fine.

Two further fines of €250 each were imposed for using a vehicle for which road tax does not apply and for displaying an imitation sticker.

Judge Connellan granted Mr Siddalingappa legal aid and set the appeal damages at €250 cash.
