Major Cycle Route Begins Construction in CanberraMajor Cycle Route Begins Construction in Canberra Construction has commenced on a significant cycle route in Canberra, paving the way for enhanced safety and enjoyment for cyclists in the city’s northern suburbs. The 5km Garden City Cycle Route combines unpaved paths and segregated on-road cycleways, linking the existing cycleway in central Canberra to the suburb of Watson. It provides a crucial connection for commuters and leisure cyclists, passing through Braddon, Ainslie, Dickson, Hackett, and Downer. This new path complements the shared north-south path along Sullivans Creek and is funded jointly by the Australian and ACT governments. Phase 1A of the project is currently underway on Torrens Street, creating a 4-meter wide shared concrete path between Cooyong and Henty Streets. The path extends along Henty Street to Ijong Street in Braddon, with a width of 3 meters. The work involves removing an existing path and constructing six new raised zebra crossings. To improve driveway accessibility, colored paving and line markings will be installed at the points where the path intersects driveways. Phase 1A is expected to be completed in early 2025, weather permitting. Phases 1B and 1C are currently out to tender, and the ACT Government will provide updated timelines once contracts have been awarded. Preliminary designs for the entire cycle route have been finalized, with funds allocated for detailed design and construction of segments one through four. Segments five through seven are subject to future funding.

Work has begun on a major cycle route in Canberra, setting the wheels in motion for safer and more enjoyable journeys through the city’s northern suburbs.

The 5km Garden City Cycle Route consists of both unpaved paths and segregated on-road cycleways, connecting the cycleway in central Canberra to the suburb of Watson.

Along the way the route also passes through the other northern suburbs of Braddon, Ainslie, Dickson, Hackett and Downer, improving connections for active travellers to schools, shops, playing fields and green spaces.

The cycleway complements another shared north-south path along Sullivans Creek in the west and is co-funded by the Australian and ACT governments.

Phase 1A of the works is now well underway on Torrens Street, creating a four metre wide shared concrete path between Cooyong and Henty Streets, and a three metre wide path continuing along Henty Street to Ijong Street in Braddon.

This work includes the removal of an existing path and the construction of six new raised zebra crossings. Where the new path crosses driveways, sections of the driveways will be treated with coloured paving and line markings.

This phase of the project is expected to last approximately seven months, weather permitting, and be ready for operation in early 2025.

Phase 1B and 1C of the works have been tendered and the Australian Capital Territory Government will release updated timelines once contracts are awarded.

Preliminary designs have been completed for the full cycle route and funds have been allocated for the detailed design and construction of segments one through four. Segments five through seven are subject to future funding.
