FREDERICK, Maryland. — Lottery luck struck for Annette Smith, a dedicated lottery player from West Virginia, when she purchased a Maryland Lottery Pick 5 ticket that won her $50,000.

Originally from Maryland, Annette is an avid player of several lottery games, including scratch cards, Mega Millions, Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 5. Despite living in West Virginia, she has been crossing state lines for years to play Maryland lottery games, hoping for a big win during tough economic times.

On July 21, Annette made her regular stop at the Wawa at 1001 West Patrick Street in Frederick to get her morning coffee before heading to work. During her visit, she decided to buy a pair of Pick 5 tickets, selecting combinations based on her birth date numbers. One of her $1 Straight Bet tickets for the afternoon drawing, numbered 80578, turned out to be a $50,000 winner.

Annette discovered her win after work by checking the Maryland Lottery website. Overcome with disbelief and excitement, she ran home to share the news with her husband, screaming with joy. “I never thought I would win such a big prize,” she said. “It felt like a birthday present that came early!”

Annette plans to save and invest her winnings wisely. Although she has no immediate plans for the funds, the unexpected windfall is a welcome financial boost. Her enthusiasm for playing the lottery remains strong: “I will definitely continue playing. I hope I can win again!”

The Wawa store that sold the winning ticket will also receive a $500 lottery bonus, in honor of selling a winning $50,000 Pick 5 ticket.

MIDDLE RIVER, Maryland. — Orville Horton and his wife Frances celebrate after winning a two-day getaway to St. Michaels through the Maryland Lottery’s My Lottery Rewards (MLR) program. The couple were selected as winners in the July 3 drawing.

Orville Horton, 76, has been a member of the MLR program since its inception. The Middle River resident, who retired from a local furniture manufacturing company in 2011, now works two days a week as a consultant. The part-time job gives him ample time to travel, a passion he and his wife share. Last September, the couple enjoyed a cruise to Alaska.

Orville and Frances had often seen signs for St. Michaels during their trips to the Eastern Shore, but had never visited the Talbot County town. When Orville saw that a trip to St. Michaels was available through MLR, he eagerly filled in his tow points.

“I told her, ‘We have to go to St. Michaels,’” Orville said.

Orville’s prize includes a two-night stay at The Old Brick Inn and a resort credit toward drinks, dinner or other activities in the area. Frederick County resident Suzette Mitchell was also selected as a winner in the same drawing.

Orville remains a loyal participant in the MLR program, which began in 2013. He recalls buying a TV from Westinghouse Electric Corporation years ago using price points.

“I’ve been playing since the beginning,” he said.

The MLR program allows participants to enter non-winning scratch cards, winning and non-winning draw games, and FAST PLAY tickets to earn points. These points can be used to enter promotions for a chance to win various prizes, including vacations, tech packages, and gift cards.

HYATTSVILLE, Maryland. — A Prince George’s County woman has won a $50,000 top prize playing the Gold Bar Bingo scratch-off lottery, the Maryland Lottery announced. The winner, a Hyattsville resident, earned her victory with a ticket from the fourth edition of the $5 game.

Earlier this week, the lucky player asked her son to buy some bingo-themed scratch-off tickets. He purchased a selection of $3 and $5 tickets at the Langley Shop at 8001 New Hampshire Avenue and took them home. The woman took her time playing the games and initially thought she had won $500.

“I didn’t see it right away,” she said. “I saw I had four corners and I thought I won $500.”

Upon closer inspection, she realized she had spotted an “X” pattern on the sixth bingo card, indicating a $50,000 prize. Unsure of the amount, she called her son to verify the winnings.

“I looked at the ticket, but neither of us can see well,” said the winner’s son. He took the ticket back to the lottery vendor to scan the prize check area, confirming the $50,000 win.

“When he called to tell me, I was shocked,” the retired housekeeper said. “I’m just very grateful for this good fortune.”

Claiming her prize at lottery headquarters, the winner said she hadn’t decided how she would use her winnings. The retailer, Langley Shop, will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The Gold Bar Bingo 4th Edition game has one top prize of $50,000 remaining, along with three $10,000 prizes and other prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000. A fifth edition of the game, featuring a black background, went on sale this week with eight $50,000 top prizes and ten $10,000 prizes.
