Strzesinski, from Ida, and Anderson, who live just across the border in Ohio, are competing in the derby for the first time and can’t wait to get their first punch, whether they throw it or take it.

“Hopefully we deliver,” Anderson said. “I’m excited. I don’t have a lot of strategy right now. I’m just going out there to have fun.”

Anderson and Strzesinski both got involved thanks to Kyle’s brother Ryan, who talked them into it.

“My dad used to race in the derby, but he quit,” Anderson said. “I’ve always watched the derbies and I wanted to race them. I thought it was time. I talked to a few people about it, bought a car and we’re going to do it. I’m going to build a car for next year.”

Anderson has been working on the car on and off since late March, with a few tweaks needed last week but he believes the car is ready to go.

“I’m going to go out there and try to hit someone as hard as I can,” he said. “I’m going to see what I can do this year and get ready for next year.”

The 21-year-old Strzesinski knows it is his first time, but he hopes for a surprise and the victory.

“The perfect scenario is that I make it to the feature and win it all,” he said. “You can always hope.”

He and Ryan get similar paint schemes, with Ryan getting the number 01x on his door, while Kyle drives the No. 83.

“My dad wanted to help out a little bit,” he said. “I let him pick the number.”

Kyle got some advice.

“They’ve all been giving me advice on what to do, who to chase. We’ve got a little plan together. It’s just a bit of ‘make yourself known’, but try to save your car so you can get to the feature.”

There will be a lot of family watching, some of them helped with a bit of getting the car ready.

“We all live in Ida and we have a lot of family members come,” he said. “We have friends who pitch in here and there. There are always people willing to lend a hand.”

The Demolition Derby is one of the biggest attractions of the fair each year. It often features second, third and even fourth generation participants. Last year, the Derby celebrated its 50th annual event. Joe Nash was the grand prize winner.
