Céline Dion is convinced that the spirit of her late husband is still in her life.
The 56-year-old “My Heart Will Go On” singer was devastated when her husband of 22 years, René Angélil, a music producer, died of throat cancer in 2016 at the age of 73. Now she’s opening up about her feelings for him in her life.
Canadian Céline, who struggles with Stiff Person Syndrome, says in her upcoming documentary ‘I Am: Céline Dion’: “I’m still married to René – he’s still my husband.
“When we have to travel to my treatment rooms to see my doctors, I always take photos (of René) with me.
“And of course we have photos everywhere in the house.”
The new documentary about Céline will be released on Amazon Prime Video from June 25.
She recently shared that the children she had with René are afraid that René will die because of her battle with Stiff Person Syndrome.
Celine was forced to retire from performing following her diagnosis with the rare condition in 2022, saying during an interview on Australian morning show Sunrise: “I don’t have my mother. I don’t have my father. My children are scared because they’ve lost their father.
“They wonder if I’m going to die.”
Céline had her three sons – René-Charles, 23, and 13-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy – with René.
Her disease causes increasing muscle stiffness and recurrent muscle spasms.
The singer first experienced the symptoms in 2008, but they worsened in 2021 when she had to postpone her Las Vegas residency due to “severe” spam and later canceled her “Courage” world tour.
She also recently admitted that she didn’t take the time to understand the early symptoms of her Stiff Person Syndrome.
Celine told 59-year-old broadcaster Hoda Kotb on the ‘Today’ show: “I didn’t take the time I should have taken to figure it out.”
Referring to how she cared for the sick René when she was suffering, she added: “My husband was also fighting for his own life. I had to raise my children, I had to hide. I had to try to be a hero.”
But she added that her symptoms became too unbearable to stop sharing with her loved ones: “I felt my body leaving me, I was holding on to my own dreams… I couldn’t do this anymore.
“For me, lying was too hard. Lying to the people who got me where I am now, I couldn’t do it anymore.”
She added that her stiffness can also sometimes feel like parts of her body are stuck in place, saying, “It feels like if I point my feet, they stay (there).
“It’s a cramp, but it’s like you’re in a position where you can’t unlock them.
“I once broke ribs, because sometimes, if it’s really bad, they can just break.”
