Vice Chancellor Professor Suresh Gosavi emphasized the importance of making such training accessible to students in light of the growing need for disaster response. The course will cover a range of topics, including: * Disaster preparedness and prevention * Disaster response and recovery * Disaster risk management To develop the curriculum, SPPU will collaborate with experts in the field. Initially, the courses will be offered through the university’s existing Department of Disaster Management. The university is also considering establishing a separate Department of Disaster Management in the future. The initiative was spearheaded by Kalpesh Yadav, joint secretary of the Yuva Sena, who highlighted the growing demand for disaster management professionals in both Maharashtra and beyond. Currently, the number of private educational institutions offering disaster management courses in Maharashtra is limited. SPPU will be the first state university to offer such courses. The course launch is part of the university’s implementation of the new education policy, which aims to promote skill-based learning. The University has received positive feedback from various stakeholders, including the Yuva Sena and experts in the field. The course is expected to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in disaster management, preparing them for potential careers in this sector. The course will be offered to students in all affiliated colleges, providing a valuable opportunity for young people to specialize in disaster management and contribute to the safety and well-being of their communities.

Due to increase in natural and man-made calamities, there is a growing need for disaster management. Therefore, it is imperative to make courses on this subject available to students of all colleges, said Vice Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, Professor Suresh Gosavi.

Gosavi said, “Due to natural and man-made events, many citizens are facing major crises which require disaster management. Therefore, a request was made on behalf of the Yuva Sena through a representation to the Vice Chancellor of the University. The university will start new courses through the department of disaster management in all affiliated colleges. Initially, we will prepare the syllabus of this course with the help of experts in this field and then the course will be designed accordingly.” Gosavi even promised to start a separate department of disaster management in the university.

The proposal to start a disaster management course was recently made by Kalpesh Yadav, joint secretary of the Yuva Sena, and approved by the SPPU board. Yadav said, “New skill courses are being started with the implementation of the new education policy. It will be helpful for students if the university starts a disaster management course. There are many jobs available in disaster management not only in Maharashtra but also outside the state. There is a need for a university to start disaster management courses by taking advantage of this employment opportunity.”

“SPPU Vice Chancellor Professor Suresh Gosavi has agreed to this demand and promised to set up a separate disaster management department in the university soon and offer a course to the students,” Yadav said.

The number of private educational institutions offering disaster management courses in Maharashtra is very small. Therefore, SPPU would be the first state university to start such a course.
