Sharma’s letter, addressed to the Director, Child PGI, further said: “No action despite repeated instructions reflects your indifference towards administrative work and carelessness. This shows failure to discharge your duties and responsibilities as the Director of the institute.”

The secretary to the principal has asked for a satisfactory explanation in the matter within 15 days. “If you are unable to submit a reasonable explanation within 15 days, it will be assumed that you have nothing to report and further legal action will be taken based on the evidence available,” the letter said.

This is not the first time that authorities have been directed to take necessary action regarding the dire condition of Noida’s Child PGI.

Former UP Chief Secretary DS Mishra and former UP Principal Secretary (Health) Alok Kumar had earlier given necessary instructions to carry out repairs, but to no avail.

The stone slabs of the hospital walls are broken in some places, so the hospital management has put up warning signs to warn patients, their caregivers and visitors.

Even the ceiling has been damaged by leaks. Recently, a section of the false ceiling in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) visiting room collapsed, narrowly missing patients and nursing staff.

Notably, the 240-bed facility is the only super-speciality children’s hospital in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) region, and one of four in the country. The facility was built by the Noida authorities and opened in Noida in 2015.

Director, SSPHPGTI, Dr AK Singh said, “The situation has been like this for long and even previous directors have taken up the issue with the authorities. A comprehensive solution is needed and we have already communicated with the authorities to take steps to rectify the situation.”

The five-storey Child PGI building in Noida’s Sector 30 houses several paediatric departments including haematology, gastroenterology, otolaryngology, urology, cardiology and orthopaedics. The facility also has a Down syndrome clinic, a metabolic disorders clinic, a cancer genetics clinic, a couples genetics clinic, a neurogenetics clinic and a neonatal surgery clinic.

Commenting on the development, Sanjay Khatri, Additional CEO of Noida Authority, said, “Uttar Pradesh Rajkiya Nirman Nigam (UPRNN) was awarded the contract for the construction of the hospital. A field visit to the facility was conducted a few days ago and an estimate of approximately 7 crore has been prepared and already sent to UPRNN. The work is expected to start once the approval is received.”
