Howe stated that he remains committed to his current position at Newcastle and has not had any official communication with the FA. Amidst speculation linking him to the England job, Howe maintains that his players can see his commitment through his daily actions and conduct. He believes they understand his dedication to the club and do not require explicit reassurance. Howe expressed concerns about the challenges posed by the long journey to Japan and the extreme summer heat for his team’s upcoming friendlies. The heat and quick turnaround times can significantly impact players’ performance, making athleticism and preparation crucial.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe said on Tuesday he had not yet had any official contact regarding the vacant England manager role and insisted he was fully committed to the Premier League club.
“There is absolutely no contact to be made with anyone and I am totally committed to Newcastle,” Howe told reporters in Tokyo when asked if the English Football Association had approached him about taking charge of the national team.
Newcastle will play friendlies against J-League sides Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan on Wednesday and Yokohama F. Marinos on Saturday.
Howe has been linked with the England job, vacated by Gareth Southgate after the club’s Euro 2024 final defeat this month, along with former Chelsea managers Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Graham Potter.
Howe dismissed suggestions his players needed to hear directly from him about his loyalty to Newcastle amid public speculation over his future.
“There’s nothing to discuss,” Howe said.
“I don’t have to address the players. I hope they know that from the way I behave and the way I conduct myself on a daily basis and how committed I am to the club.”
Howe said the long journey and extreme summer heat in Japan could pose a challenge for his team ahead of the two matches this week.
“Obviously, when you travel so far somewhere and the turnaround times are very quick, and the travel really does impact you. And if I may say so on behalf of the players, it is tough,” Howe said.
Even light exercise can feel “hard” because of the high temperatures, he said.
“I think the biggest factor we’re going to have to deal with is the heat,” Howe said.
“Just from today’s training you can see the effect it has on the players. Even an exercise that is very light suddenly turns into a heavy one,” he said.
“I think it’s going to be a big test for us athletically. Probably the ideal test of where we are as we prepare for the season.”
