Obituary: Ruth Evelyn BatesObituary: Ruth Evelyn Bates Ruth Evelyn Swanson Bates, 91, of Chattanooga, TN, passed away on July 28, 2024. Born in Chattanooga on March 19, 1933, to James and Gladys Swanson, Ruth owned and operated East Brainerd Produce and Florist. She was known for her outgoing personality, love of adventure, and passion for reading, dancing, and flower design. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Louis “Bullet” Bates, son Charles Carroll, and several siblings. She is survived by her daughters Bobbie Brown, Debbie Howington, Kay Thompson, and Lisa Bates; son Buddy Bates; eleven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Additionally, Ruth is survived by siblings Jim Swanson, Gladys McCallister, Lynda Hickman, Nina Riley, Darlene Burrell, and Madeline Daniel. A celebration of life will be held on August 1, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, followed by burial at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Visitation will take place on July 31 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on August 1 from 11:30 a.m. until the service. Tributes and memories can be shared at www.heritagechattanooga.com. Ruth Evelyn Bates Ruth Evelyn Swanson Bates, age 91, of Chattanooga, TN, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2024. Ruth was born in Chattanooga, TN, on March 19, 1933, the daughter of the late James Alfred Swanson and Gladys McClure Swanson. She was the owner of East Brainerd Produce and Florist for many years. Ruth never met a stranger and was very adventurous. She was an avid reader, enjoyed dancing, traveling, and designing flowers. Above all, Ruth loved her family. In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Louis R. “Bullet” Bates; a son, Charles Carroll; and several siblings. Survivors include her daughters, Bobbie Brown, Debbie Howington (Dennis), Kay Thompson, and Lisa Bates (Brad Cosgrove); son, Buddy Bates (Tina); eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Jim Swanson; and sisters, Gladys McCallister, Lynda Hickman, Nina Riley (Jim), Darlene Burrell (Tony), and Madeline Daniel. Several nieces and nephews are also surviving. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until service time at Heritage Funeral Home.
