He has also been an active race car driver for over a decade, participating in IMCA Hobby Stock races. Shiner’s passion for racing began when he expressed a desire to join his future brother-in-law’s team. With the acquisition of a car and countless hours of preparation, Shiner embarked on his racing journey. One of the most rewarding aspects of racing for Shiner is the camaraderie and support he receives from his family, friends, and fellow competitors. He cherishes the memories and bonds that he has formed through this sport. Shiner’s racing career has been marked by significant achievements, including winning the Open Class Championship in his first year as a driver. One of his most cherished moments was his first Hobby Stock race at Desert Thunder, where he raced before a supportive hometown crowd. Reflecting on his experiences, Shiner acknowledges the challenges posed by the Sweetwater Raceway in Rock Springs. Its technical track and steep curves demand a high level of skill and perseverance. As a message to younger drivers, Shiner emphasizes the importance of resilience and perseverance. He encourages them to never give up, as the rewards of racing are worth the effort invested.
Cam Shiner is a 29-year-old from Price, Utah. He has been working in his family’s business since he was 13 and continues to do so. He has been driving for eleven and a half years, racing the #30C car in IMCA Hobby Stock.
“The reason I got into the sport was because of my future brother-in-law, Kyler Marchello. I joked that it would be fun to see me on their team next season. He told me that his dad had a car sitting behind the shop that would make a great open class race car. We bought it and had to figure out how to convert it into a race car. We put all of our spare time and effort into this project. We barely made it to the test and tune-up weekend, but we did it! Now we’re on our second car in our second season,” Shiner explained.
He continued: “One thing I love about the sport is all the memories I get to make. Spending time with my family and friends is something you will always cherish. Everyone has been so great to work with, from lending tools, parts, advice and ideas.”
Shiner won the Open Class Championship in his first year as a driver, one of his greatest achievements to date.
“My fondest memory is my first Hobby Stock race at Desert Thunder. After racing at Rock Springs, I was super excited to go home and race in front of my family and friends,” said Shiner. “There was a huge number of cars that weekend and the competition was insane!”
He concluded the interview with a question about the most difficult circuit to race on and a message for younger drivers.
“The toughest track is Sweetwater Raceway in Rock Springs. My first Hobby Stock race was there this season. The track is very technical and the banked corners are super steep! If I had a message for younger drivers it would be to not give up when things get tough. It gets better as the season goes on,” Shiner concluded.
