The National Weather Service (NWS) declared Monday’s fog event the densest in the city’s history since 1984. The fog, which rolled in overnight, descended upon the city shortly after sunrise, obscuring the Golden Gate Bridge and skyscrapers. Visibility was reduced to a mere quarter of a mile in some areas, making driving and walking hazardous. The fog also wreaked havoc on ferry services. Multiple ferry routes across the San Francisco Bay were canceled or delayed due to the low visibility. The San Francisco Bay Ferry system announced significant delays on all routes, with passengers urged to seek alternate transportation. The Golden Gate Ferry service also experienced major disruptions, with six ferry terminals temporarily closed. Commuters were stranded on both sides of the bay, as ferries were unable to safely navigate through the dense fog. The fog is expected to linger throughout the day, but the NWS predicts it will gradually dissipate by evening. However, the fog may return on Tuesday and Wednesday, potentially causing further transportation issues. “This is a historic fog event for San Francisco,” said NWS meteorologist Diana Henderson. “It’s a combination of a strong high-pressure system over the Pacific Ocean and weak winds allowing the fog to accumulate.” Residents and visitors are advised to use caution while driving or walking in foggy conditions. They should slow down, use headlights, and leave ample following distance. Pedestrians should wear bright clothing and be extra alert for vehicles. The fog has also led to the cancellation of several outdoor events, including a planned fireworks show on Treasure Island. Residents are encouraged to check with event organizers for updates. Despite the disruptions, the thick fog has created an ethereal atmosphere in San Francisco. Residents and tourists have been capturing and sharing photos of the fog-shrouded city, providing a unique and memorable experience.
