San Diego Residents Witness Rare Shark AttackSan Diego Residents Witness Rare Shark Attack San Diego, California – On Saturday, July 22nd, 2023, a rare shark attack occurred off the coast of La Jolla Cove, San Diego. Witnesses reported seeing a large shark, estimated to be a Great White, attacking a swimmer approximately 100 yards from shore. “I heard a scream and looked out to see a man thrashing in the water,” said eyewitness Emily Jones. “The water was red with blood.” Lifeguards rushed to the scene and pulled the victim, a 32-year-old male, out of the water. The victim sustained severe injuries to his legs and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. “It was a very difficult situation,” said Lifeguard Captain Bob Smith. “Shark attacks are extremely rare in San Diego, but we are trained to respond quickly and effectively.” The beach was closed following the attack, and a warning flag was issued for the surrounding area. Experts believe the shark was likely attracted to the area by a large school of fish. “Great Whites are known to follow schools of fish close to shore,” said Dr. John Smith, a marine biologist at the University of San Diego. “This was an unfortunate incident, but it is a reminder that sharks are apex predators and should be respected.” The San Diego Police Department is investigating the incident and is working with marine biologists to determine the species of the shark responsible. “We want to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” said Police Chief David Nisleit. “We will increase patrols in the area and work with local experts to assess the situation.” Residents and tourists have been advised to heed the lifeguard warnings and to stay out of the water when sharks are present.
