According to OPD, officers responded to the Chevron gas station located at the intersection of 27th Street and Telegraph Avenue at approximately 8:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Witnesses at the scene told police that the victim was shot multiple times during an altercation with another man. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived. “We are actively searching for the suspect,” said OPD Lieutenant Ray Kelly. “We believe he is still at large.” OPD has released limited information about the suspect. He is described as a Black male in his early to mid-20s, wearing a black hoodie and jeans. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from the gas station and surrounding businesses to identify the suspect. They are also interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence. The motive for the shooting is still unknown. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact OPD at (510) 238-3326. The shooting marks the 5th homicide in Oakland in 2023. Mayor Sheng Thao released a statement condemning the violence and calling for an end to the senseless killings. “I am deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life,” Thao said. “We must work together as a community to address the root causes of violence and find solutions that keep our residents safe.”
