Spokane Resident Stunned by Alligator Discovery in BackyardSpokane Resident Stunned by Alligator Discovery in Backyard A Spokane resident was left in disbelief recently after discovering a 5-foot alligator lurking in their backyard. The homeowner, who wished to remain anonymous, said they were tending to their garden when they noticed an unusual shape in the tall grass. Upon closer inspection, they realized it was the unmistakable form of an alligator. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” the stunned resident said. “I had never seen anything like that in my life.” The alligator, estimated to be around 200 pounds, was reportedly found near a small pond in the backyard. Authorities were immediately notified and responded to the scene. According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), it is highly unusual to find alligators in Washington state. The only known population of alligators in the state is found in a small, isolated area of Lake Washington, and there are no records of any escapes or releases from that population. “This is an extremely rare occurrence,” said WDFW biologist Bill Leonard. “We are still investigating how the alligator got to Spokane.” The alligator was captured and transported to a local animal shelter, where it will be cared for until a suitable placement can be found. WDFW is working to determine the animal’s origin and is urging residents to report any sightings of exotic or non-native species. The incident has raised concerns about the potential danger to humans and pets from exotic animals that are illegally kept as pets or escape from captivity. The WDFW reminds residents that it is illegal to possess alligators or other dangerous animals without a permit. “We take the safety of our communities very seriously,” said Leonard. “Anyone who has information about illegal exotic animal ownership is encouraged to contact us.” The Spokane resident who discovered the alligator said they were relieved that the animal was safely removed but expressed concern about the potential consequences if it had not been found. “I’m just glad I didn’t get too close,” they said. “It could have been a lot worse.”
