San Antonio Symphony Unveils Historic Collaboration: Premiere of ‘Missions’ SymphonySan Antonio Symphony Unveils Historic Collaboration: Premiere of ‘Missions’ Symphony The acclaimed San Antonio Symphony is set to premiere a groundbreaking new work evocative of the city’s rich cultural heritage. ‘Missions,’ a symphony composed by Eric Nathan, draws inspiration from the iconic Spanish missions that have adorned the San Antonio landscape for centuries. “The missions are a testament to the resilience and artistry of our ancestors,” said San Antonio Symphony Music Director Sebastian Lang-Lessing. “Nathan’s symphony captures the spirit of these extraordinary places.” Nathan, a renowned composer and Texan native, spent years researching the missions and their impact on San Antonio. The resulting composition is a musical journey through time, weaving together the sounds of Native American flute, Spanish trumpets, and modern harmonies. “I wanted to create a work that reflected the beauty, diversity, and historical significance of the missions,” said Nathan. “Each movement evokes a different aspect of these sacred spaces, from their architectural grandeur to their role in shaping the city.” The premiere of ‘Missions’ will take place on October 8 and 9, 2023, at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. The San Antonio Symphony, led by Lang-Lessing, will perform the symphony alongside a chorus and special guest musicians. In addition to the concert, the Symphony is partnering with the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park to create educational and community-engagement programs. The goal is to connect audiences with the history and cultural importance of the missions. “This collaboration is a celebration of San Antonio’s unique cultural heritage,” said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “The symphony’s premiere of ‘Missions’ will foster a deeper appreciation for these historic landmarks and inspire generations to come.” The premiere of ‘Missions’ marks a significant milestone in the history of the San Antonio Symphony and the city’s artistic community. It promises to be a captivating musical experience that connects audiences with the past, present, and future of one of Texas’ most beloved cultural treasures.
