According to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, the Grand Strand has hosted over 20 sandcastle contests since May 2023. This represents an unprecedented increase compared to previous years and has solidified Myrtle Beach’s reputation as a hub for sand art enthusiasts. The contests have attracted participants of all ages, from budding young builders to seasoned veterans. The diverse themes and challenges have inspired imaginative and awe-inspiring creations, transforming the beaches into temporary art galleries. “We’re thrilled to see such an enthusiastic response to our sandcastle contests,” said Karen Riordan, President and CEO of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. “The creativity and craftsmanship on display is truly remarkable.” One of the most popular competitions was the 17th Annual South Carolina Sand Sculpture Classic. Held in May at the Springmaid Resort, the event featured 16 master sand sculptors from the United States and Canada. Their intricate sculptures, inspired by the theme “Under the Big Top,” amazed spectators with their size and detail. Another highlight was the 21st Annual North American Sand Sculpting Championship. Held in June at the Marriott Grande Dunes, the competition drew over 100 contestants from 13 countries. The winning sculpture, a breathtaking tribute to the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant, was particularly moving. The surge in sandcastle contests has also provided a boost to the local economy. Visitors have flocked to Myrtle Beach to witness the artistic displays, contributing to hotel stays, dining, and retail sales. “These contests have been a wonderful way to bring people together, foster creativity, and showcase the beauty of our beaches,” said Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune. “We’re proud to be known as the ‘Sandcastle Capital of the World.'” As the summer season continues, Myrtle Beach expects to host even more sandcastle contests.
