The Tulsa Race Massacre On May 31 and June 1, 1921, Tulsa was the site of a horrifying racial massacre. A white mob attacked the prosperous Greenwood District, home to a thriving African American community. Hundreds of people were killed, thousands were injured, and the homes and businesses of Greenwood were burned to the ground. This tragedy remains a dark chapter in Tulsa’s history, marking a deep rift between the city’s black and white communities. Resilience and Recovery In the aftermath of the massacre, Tulsa embarked on a long journey of reconciliation and rebuilding. The city established the Tulsa Race Riot Commission in 1997 to investigate the events of 1921 and make recommendations for reparations. In 2001, the Greenwood Cultural Center was opened to commemorate the lives lost and celebrate the legacy of the Greenwood District. Today, Tulsa is a thriving and diverse city. It is home to the University of Tulsa, the Philbrook Museum of Art, and the Gathering Place, a 100-acre public park that has become a symbol of the city’s resilience.
