The Rail Trail will serve as a vital recreation hub, offering a scenic and accessible route for walking, jogging, cycling, and other outdoor activities. It will connect neighborhoods and create a vibrant space for the community. “This Rail Trail is a game-changer for our city,” said Mayor Sarno. “It will enhance our quality of life, promote health and wellness, and boost our economy.” The trail will feature modern amenities, including benches, lighting, and wayfinding signage. It will also incorporate historical markers, highlighting the city’s rich railroading legacy. The project is part of a larger effort to revitalize Springfield’s neighborhoods and create a more walkable and bikeable city. It has received significant support from local organizations and government agencies. “This Rail Trail will breathe new life into our community,” said Springfield resident and avid cyclist, Maria Morales. “It’s a great way to get people outside and explore our city.” Construction on the Rail Trail is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2023 and is expected to be completed by 2026.
