Titled “From the Shadows of the Past,” the composition is the brainchild of acclaimed American composer Kevin Puts. Puts’s inspiration for the piece was drawn from his extensive research into the city’s past, its struggles, and its triumphs. The result is a multi-layered musical tapestry that evokes the spirit of St. Louis and its people. The composition opens with a plaintive cello solo, representing the city’s humble beginnings and its struggle for identity. As the orchestra joins in, the music builds in intensity, reflecting the city’s growth and its role as a major industrial and cultural center. Throughout the work, Puts employs a variety of musical techniques to convey different aspects of St. Louis’s history. Native American melodies evoke the city’s indigenous roots, while soaring brass fanfares symbolize its industrial prowess. Graceful string passages capture the city’s cultural refinement, and bluesy improvisations pay homage to its vibrant music scene. “From the Shadows of the Past” is a powerful and moving musical journey that explores the complexities and resilience of St. Louis. It is a testament to the city’s rich history and its enduring spirit. The world premiere of the work will be conducted by Music Director Stéphane Denève.
