Albuquerque: Manhole Explosion Leaves Dozens Without WaterAlbuquerque: Manhole Explosion Leaves Dozens Without Water Albuquerque, New Mexico – An explosion at a manhole in Albuquerque on Tuesday morning left dozens of residents without water. The blast occurred around 9:30 am near the intersection of Eubank Boulevard and Central Avenue. According to the Albuquerque Fire Department, the explosion was caused by a buildup of methane gas in the sewer system. The explosion sent a large plume of smoke and debris into the air. Three parked cars were damaged, and several windows at nearby businesses were shattered. “It sounded like a bomb,” said resident Steve Martinez. “The whole street shook.” The explosion also severed a water main, leaving approximately 50 homes and businesses without water service. The City of Albuquerque Water Authority (CABA) responded to the scene and began repairs. “We are working as quickly as possible to restore water service,” said CABA spokesperson Abby Snyder. “We understand that this is a major inconvenience for our customers, and we appreciate their patience.” CABA estimated that water service would be restored by late Tuesday afternoon. In the meantime, the city is providing bottled water to affected residents. The cause of the methane buildup is still under investigation. However, CABA officials said that it is not uncommon for methane gas to accumulate in sewer systems. “Methane gas is a byproduct of the decomposition of organic matter,” said CABA engineer Tom Green. “It can be a hazard if it builds up to high levels.” CABA officials urged residents to report any unusual odors or sounds coming from manholes or sewer drains.
