Irvine City Council Approves Senior-Focused Community GardenIrvine City Council Approves Senior-Focused Community Garden In a bid to promote health and community among senior residents, the Irvine City Council has unanimously approved the establishment of a new community garden exclusively for seniors. The garden will be located at the Los Olivos Community Center and is expected to open in early 2024. The garden will feature raised garden beds, accessible paths, and a seating area, catering to the specific needs of senior citizens. It will provide seniors with an opportunity to engage in physical activity, enjoy the outdoors, and connect with others in their community. “This community garden is a wonderful addition to the services we offer our senior residents,” said Mayor Farrah Khan. “It will provide them with a space to grow their own food, socialize, and improve their overall well-being.” The garden is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to address the needs of its aging population. Irvine has a large and growing senior population, with over 20% of its residents over the age of 65. The city is committed to providing its senior residents with a high quality of life and opportunities to stay active and engaged. “The community garden is a great example of how we can work together to create a more inclusive and supportive community for our seniors,” said Councilmember Tammy Kim. “We are excited to see the positive impact it will have on their lives.” The garden will be managed by the city’s Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Division in partnership with local senior organizations. The city will provide funding for the garden’s construction and ongoing maintenance. Community members are invited to get involved in the garden’s development by volunteering their time or donating materials and resources.
